Mirai spoiler chit chat
Today we’ll be looking at Mamoru Hosoda’s latest work Mirai.
Also spoilers ahead if that wasn’t evident.
Hosoda takes us back to the theme of family in this one. This time we glimpse into early childhood and get a time travel mixed with Where The Wild Things Are. While not exactly about anything this movie feels more a kin to a photo album.
It centers around Kun who having just got a little sister is traveling through time meeting future and past family members and learning a tiny part of their lives.
While a fun little story there isn’t much meat on the bone. Unlike the other movies I talked about this one feels just like moments. Which isn’t a bad thing but it proves difficult to really analyze or talk about meaning of the movie.
So what is this movie really about? In a sense nothing. And that’s ok. We don’t need a world ending plot to entertain us or some weird plot twist. Much like Where The Wild Things Are Kun just needed an escape. The every day and boring moments are what Kun learns from.
That learning how to ride a bike scene really got to me. Like it’s such an important learning moment for Kun and his dad. It’s one of the first times a child learns how to do something meaning full. It’s 100% you in getting that bike going. Your parents and friends can help you but it’s dependent on you to keep peddling.
Kun learns from his family and at the end shallows this pride to go on vacation. Every moment can be important to someone. So in a way this movie is about the next day, about the future.
